Fiscal Obligations for U.S. Expats living in Portugal.

As U.S. Citizen Expat living in Portugal, you have different fiscal obligations in both countries, depending on the fiscal status that you have in Portugal and another two obligations in the U.S.

As Portuguese resident you must file the income tax return, IRS Form 3. Income Tax Filing: “Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares (IRS)” under the different categories A to H income; some status will exempt you to file worldwide income in Portugal as the Non-habitual Resident.

As U.S. Citizen you must file, the U.S. individual tax return, Form 1040, reporting your worldwide income and the FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report), reporting all your financial accounts outside the U.S.
